Our verdict

Editorial verdict4.1

Qtrade has always been the broker that reviewers rank first and retail investors overlook, because its commissions used to be CAD 8.75 while Wealthsimple charged nothing. That objection is gone. Equities, ETFs and mutual funds are now all CAD 0, options are CAD 0.75 a contract, and the quarterly administration fee that used to punish small accounts has been removed. What you get on top is the best research package in Canadian retail brokerage — Morningstar analyst recommendations and target prices on every name, fundamental and technical screeners, a daily Morning News Call and a genuine portfolio-analytics suite — plus a service desk that has repeatedly outscored every competitor in independent rankings. Three things should still give you pause. The mobile app is rated 3.7 and is clearly a generation behind Questrade and Wealthsimple. Cash earns literally 0.00% on balances up to CAD 2,000,000, which is indefensible in the 4.45% prime rate this record carries for December 2025. And Qtrade is the only broker of the three that will not tell you what it charges to convert currency. For a research-led investor who trades from a desktop and holds little idle cash, Qtrade is arguably the best account in Canada. For a phone-first investor, it is not close.

Best for

  • Research-driven stock and ETF investors
  • Mutual fund investors
  • Registered account investing (TFSA, RRSP, FHSA, RESP)
  • Investors who value customer service over app polish
  • Fixed-income and GIC buyers

Less suitable for

  • Mobile-first investors
  • Anyone holding large idle cash balances
  • Crypto, futures or forex traders
  • Frequent CAD/USD converters who need a published rate

Pros & cons

Pros

7
  • CAD 0 commission on equities, ETFs and mutual funds alike — the only Canadian broker of the three to make mutual funds free as well
  • Morningstar analyst recommendations, target prices and fundamental research bundled free on every company page, with no data subscription
  • Portfolio Analytics scores your portfolio, compares it against benchmarks and breaks it out by valuation, performance and allocation
  • Consistently top-ranked customer service in independent Canadian reviews, with knowledgeable staff on registered-account and tax questions
  • A genuine 30-day trial account with no obligation — neither Questrade nor Wealthsimple offers paper trading
  • Backed by Aviso Wealth, owned 50% by Desjardins Financial Holding and 50% by the five provincial credit union centrals and CUMIS, with CIRO regulation and CIPF cover of CAD 1,000,000 per account category
  • ECN fees are absorbed rather than passed through, except for repeated high-volume active-side Canadian trading, and Qtrade says it will contact you before charging

Cons

6
  • Cash pays 0.00% on every balance up to CAD 2,000,000 — on a CAD 25,000 cash buffer that is roughly CAD 1,100 a year of foregone interest against a Wealthsimple chequing balance
  • Qtrade publishes no foreign-exchange percentage; its FAQ says CAD/USD conversion is done at a mark-up from the Bank of Canada spot rate (a markdown on sales) but not how large that mark-up is, which makes the true cost of US investing impossible to model in advance
  • The mobile app is rated 3.7 on the Canadian App Store against Questrade's 4.7 and Wealthsimple's 4.6, and independent reviewers consistently flag mobile as the weak link
  • No fractional shares, no spot crypto, no futures, no forex or CFDs, and no international market access beyond Canada and the US
  • USD registered accounts cost USD 15 per quarter (USD 60 a year) unless you hold CAD 500,000 or trade 150 times a quarter, and de-registration costs CAD 125 in full or CAD 50 in part
  • Support offers no live chat at all and closes at 20:00 ET with no weekend cover, where Questrade runs weekends and Wealthsimple runs chat around the clock

ItemRateDetail
Trading costs
Stocks (per order)FreeCAD 0 per online equity trade, with no minimum order size and no active-trader qualification. Covers TSX, TSX Venture, CSE, Cboe Canada, NYSE, Nasdaq and OTC names. ECN fees are not passed on to clients unless they arise from repeated, high-volume trading on the active side of the Canadian market, and Qtrade states it will contact you first rather than simply charging you.
US stocksFreeSame CAD 0 schedule. US sales carry the SEC assessment fee at the current rate. Trades settle in the currency the security trades in, so a USD-side account avoids conversion. Qtrade publishes no foreign-exchange percentage: its FAQ says the CAD/USD conversion for a USD security bought in a CAD account is made at a mark-up from the Bank of Canada spot rate (a markdown on a sale), and that when you buy and sell a USD security in a CAD account on the same day Qtrade can wash the rates to one rate if you phone before the 4pm ET market close.
ETFsFreeCAD 0 on all ETFs listed on Canadian and US exchanges, buy and sell, including the crypto ETF shelf. This replaced the old restricted 'free ETF list', so there is no longer a set of eligible tickers to check before trading.
Options (per contract)CA$0.75Minimum: CA$0.75 — CAD 0 base commission plus CAD 0.75 per contract, online. Assignment costs a flat CAD 30. Exercise is treated as a representative-assisted transaction and is charged on the phone schedule (CAD 45 minimum). Each leg of a spread or combination order counts as a separate execution for fee purposes, so a four-leg iron condor is priced as four fills.
Futures (per contract)Not offeredQtrade does not offer exchange-traded futures, forex or CFDs. It is a cash-and-margin securities dealer only.

FundsFreeCAD 0 commission on mutual fund purchases and redemptions, including low-MER Series D funds. Two conditions apply: a 1% fee with a CAD 45 minimum on any fund sold or switched within 90 days (money market funds excepted), and a minimum purchase of CAD 1,000 or the prospectus minimum, whichever is greater.

Full review: Qtrade Direct Investing

This review is based on official pricing schedules, legal documents and other available sources. It does not claim that we opened an account with this broker or tested it in practice.

Fees: what Qtrade actually costs

Qtrade's 2026 schedule is the most aggressive repricing any established Canadian broker has done, because it went further than its competitors on one dimension nobody else touched.

  • Equities: CAD 0 per online trade, no minimum size, no active-trader qualification
  • ETFs: CAD 0, buy and sell, on every Canadian and US listing — the old restricted free-ETF list is gone
  • Mutual funds: CAD 0, including low-MER Series D funds. Neither Questrade (CAD 9.95) nor Wealthsimple (no mutual funds at all) matches this
  • Options: CAD 0 plus CAD 0.75 per contract, with a flat CAD 30 assignment fee
  • Fixed income and exchange-traded debentures: CAD 1 per CAD 1,000 face value, minimum CAD 24.99, capped at CAD 250

ECN fees are absorbed, not passed through, unless they arise from repeated high-volume trading on the active side of the Canadian market — and Qtrade states its first response is to contact you and help you avoid the pattern rather than simply bill you. That is a materially more client-friendly policy than the industry norm.

The account-level fees have thinned out too. There is no longer a quarterly administration fee and no inactivity fee at any balance. What remains: CAD 150 to transfer out, CAD 100 to close within the first year, USD 15 per quarter for a USD registered account (waived on Investor Plus, and FHSAs are exempt), CAD 100 to set up a formal trust account plus CAD 50 a year after the first year, CAD 125 for full de-registration and CAD 50 for partial, and CAD 6 a quarter for paper statements.

Two costs deserve harder scrutiny. Interest on cash is 0.00% on all balances up to CAD 2,000,000 — not a rounding, the published figure — with 0.10% CAD above that and 0.00% USD at any level. And the FX margin is simply not disclosed. The pricing page says only that transactions settle in the currency the security trades in and that "Qtrade may earn revenue on foreign exchange transactions." Every other broker in this comparison publishes 1.5%. We have not recorded a number for Qtrade because it does not publish one, and you should treat that opacity as a cost in itself.

Safety, ownership and regulation

Qtrade Direct Investing is not a separate company — it is a division of Aviso Financial Inc., which holds the dealer registration. Aviso Financial is a member of the Canadian Investment Regulatory Organization (CIRO) and of the Canadian Investor Protection Fund (CIPF), giving the standard top-tier Canadian protections: CAD 1,000,000 for all general accounts combined, plus a separate CAD 1,000,000 for all registered retirement accounts combined, plus a separate CAD 1,000,000 for RESPs where you are the subscriber.

The ownership structure is the most interesting safety fact here, and it is unusual. Aviso Wealth Inc. is a wholly owned subsidiary of Aviso Wealth LP, which is in turn owned 50% by Desjardins Financial Holding Inc. and 50% by a limited partnership owned by the five Provincial Credit Union Centrals and The CUMIS Group Limited. In plain terms: Qtrade sits inside a cooperative-financial-sector joint venture whose ultimate owners are Canada's largest credit union group and the credit union system itself. Sister divisions include Aviso Wealth, Qtrade Guided Portfolios and Aviso Correspondent Partners.

That structure has two consequences. On the positive side, it means Qtrade is backed by institutions with deep balance sheets and a very long time horizon, rather than by venture capital or a founder's equity. Qtrade is also the preferred direct-investing partner for credit unions across Canada, operating through more than 200 institutional partnerships — a stable, embedded distribution base that does not depend on retail marketing spend. On the cautious side, none of this is publicly listed, so there is no share price, no quarterly filing and no public balance sheet for Aviso itself to inspect. You are relying on regulatory capital requirements and the standing of the owners rather than on market transparency.

Qtrade has operated since 2000, originally built to give Canadian credit union members direct market access, giving it a 26-year record. No banking licence is held, so uninvested cash is client money at a dealer rather than a CDIC-insured deposit.

The trading platform

The Qtrade web platform is the product independent Canadian reviewers keep ranking first, and the reason is integration rather than raw power.

Order entry covers market, limit, stop-loss, stop-limit and trailing-stop types for equities, ETFs, mutual funds, bonds, options and GICs from a single ticket. It is fast and unambiguous, without the multi-platform confusion that dogs Questrade — there is one platform, and it does everything.

What surrounds the ticket is where Qtrade separates itself. Every company page carries Morningstar analyst recommendations with well-researched reviews of Canadian and US securities including top picks for growth, value and income, alongside fundamental research covering key metrics from the latest financial statements plus performance history, ratings and peer comparison. Screening tools sort thousands of stocks, mutual funds and ETFs, with prebuilt screens such as undervalued stocks or high dividend yield as well as fully custom criteria. Technical research filters candidates on bullish or bearish indicators for entry and exit timing. A daily Morning News Call packages the day's market, business and economic news, and a new issues service covers IPO access with email notification.

Portfolio Analytics is the standout tool. It scores your portfolio, compares performance against benchmarks, and switches between Valuation, Performance and Allocation views, with account history running back to inception across buys, sells, transfers, deposits, splits and dividends. Free planning tools and calculators project net worth and build retirement and education plans on top.

The mobile app is the clear weak point. It covers the essentials — biometric login, real-time quotes, order entry including options, watchlists, allocation views, news and in-app account opening — but it is rated 3.7 on the Canadian App Store across roughly 470 ratings, and MoneySense's 2026 ranking noted that Qtrade's mobile experience still trails leading competitors and that platform updates arrive slowly. If your primary device is a phone, this is the deciding weakness.

Finally, Qtrade is the only broker of the three with a 30-day trial account, a real paper-trading environment open to non-clients.

Markets and products

Qtrade's shelf is deliberately conventional: everything a Canadian securities investor needs, nothing speculative.

  • Canadian stocks on the TSX, TSX Venture, CSE and Cboe Canada; US stocks on the NYSE and Nasdaq; plus OTC stocks and rights and warrants — all at CAD 0
  • ETFs: every ETF listed on a Canadian or US exchange, including a curated crypto ETF shelf spanning multiple issuers and currencies, all commission-free and all holdable inside a TFSA or RRSP
  • Mutual funds: thousands of funds including low-MER Series D, at CAD 0 commission
  • Options: long calls and puts, spreads, covered writing and uncovered writing, at CAD 0.75 per contract
  • Bonds, debentures and GICs, priced at CAD 1 per CAD 1,000 of face value
  • New issues and IPOs, with notification emails

What is absent is a long list, and it is a coherent one: no spot crypto, no exchange-traded futures, no forex, no CFDs, no spread betting, no commodities and no fractional shares. There is also no international market access beyond Canada and the US — no London, no Frankfurt, no Tokyo.

The fractional-share gap deserves specific mention because it interacts with the commission change. Now that trades are free, the natural behaviour is to invest small amounts frequently, and without fractional shares a CAD 200 monthly contribution cannot buy into a USD 400 share. Questrade and Wealthsimple both support fractionals; Qtrade does not, which quietly limits who benefits most from its own zero-commission move.

The counterweight is that Qtrade covers the two asset classes the app-first brokers ignore. Mutual funds trade free here and cost CAD 9.95 at Questrade and do not exist at Wealthsimple. Individual bonds and GICs are available at a transparent 0.1% of par with a CAD 250 cap, where Wealthsimple has no fixed-income desk at all. For a conventional balanced portfolio built from real bonds rather than bond ETFs, Qtrade is the strongest of the three.

Account opening, funding and Investor Plus

Opening is a paperless online application with electronic funding, and Qtrade's own material stresses getting set up and trading quickly. There is no minimum deposit to open. Registered accounts cover TFSA, RRSP and spousal RRSP, FHSA, RESP, RRIF, LIF and LIRA, alongside cash and margin accounts, and every registered account can hold ETFs, Canadian and US stocks, options, GICs, bonds and mutual funds.

The smartest way in is the 30-day trial account. It is a genuine paper-trading environment, open without opening a real account, and it is the only such offer among the three brokers reviewed here. Anyone weighing a transfer should spend a week in it before paying CAD 150 to leave their current broker.

Funding is bank-transfer only. Electronic funds transfers are free in both directions and settle in one to three business days. There are no cards, no instant rails and no e-wallets. Cheque requests cost CAD 10 and dishonoured items CAD 40. Trades settle in the currency the security trades in, so holding a USD side of the account avoids conversion on US positions — but on registered accounts that USD side costs USD 15 per quarter unless you qualify for Investor Plus; FHSAs are excluded from that fee.

Investor Plus is the loyalty tier, and it is reached by holding CAD 500,000 or more in total assets or completing 150 or more trades in the previous calendar quarter. Since commissions are already CAD 0 for everyone, the benefits are structural rather than transactional: no USD registered-account fee, no physical certificate or DRS deposit and withdrawal fees on US and Canadian securities, a dedicated phone line, and better margin — prime + 1.25% below CAD 100,000 and prime + 0.75% above, against the standard prime + 1.55% and prime + 1.00%.

Leaving costs CAD 150 for a transfer out, plus CAD 100 if you close within the first year. Full de-registration of a registered plan costs CAD 125 and partial de-registration CAD 50, with RESP, TFSA and FHSA carve-outs on the partial fee.

Research and education

This is the reason to choose Qtrade over cheaper-feeling competitors, and it is worth being specific about what is actually included at no charge.

Morningstar analyst recommendations sit on every Canadian and US company page — not a data feed, but written analyst reviews with ratings and top picks segmented into growth, value and income. Most brokers either charge for third-party equity research or do not offer it at all; Questrade gives you personalised news and an options screener but no bundled analyst house, and Wealthsimple gives you a news feed. Fundamental research covers the key metrics from the most recent financial statements plus performance history, ratings and structured peer-group comparison, so you can benchmark a name against its sector without leaving the platform.

Screening runs on three axes. A fundamental screener sorts thousands of stocks, mutual funds and ETFs on custom criteria such as sector or market capitalisation, with prebuilt screens for undervalued stocks and high dividend yield. A technical research tool filters candidates on bullish or bearish indicators and helps time entries and exits. And the new issues service surfaces upcoming IPOs with notification emails.

Real-time quotes are free, alongside news feeds covering company earnings and developments with economic, market and industry context, watchlists, and price and event alerts. The daily Morning News Call is a short curated brief rather than a firehose — genuinely useful, and rare in Canadian retail brokerage.

Portfolio Analytics closes the loop: portfolio scoring, benchmark comparison, and Valuation, Performance and Allocation views, plus free planning tools and calculators that project net worth and build retirement or education plans. Account history runs back to inception across every transaction type.

Education is competent rather than exceptional — structured paths for new and experienced investors, a broker-comparison guide, transfer walkthroughs and the Weekly Market Pulse. It is aimed at self-directed adults rather than absolute beginners, which suits the platform. Combined with the trial account, it is a better environment to learn in than either competitor offers.

Customer support

Service is Qtrade's other historic strength, and the independent record backs it up. Surviscor, The Globe and Mail and Million Dollar Journey have all repeatedly placed Qtrade at or near the top of Canadian brokerage service rankings — Million Dollar Journey's review cited "the best customer service (by a large margin)" as the decisive factor, and Rob Carrick has praised the firm's pattern of steady improvement rather than sporadic overhauls.

The mechanics are straightforward. Support runs by phone on 1.877.787.2330 toll-free (604.605.4199 locally) and by email at DirectInvesting@qtrade.ca, Monday to Friday from 08:30 to 20:00 ET, in English and French. Investor Plus clients get a dedicated phone number. The head office is at 700–1111 West Georgia Street in Vancouver, though walk-in service is not offered. Where Qtrade consistently outperforms is depth: agents handle registered-account rules, contribution room, de-registration mechanics, transfer-in problems and tax-slip questions without escalation, which is precisely where discount brokers usually collapse.

There are two real gaps. There is no live chat at all — Wealthsimple runs in-app chat around the clock and Questrade runs chat on weekdays and weekends. And there is no weekend cover: the phone lines close Friday evening and reopen Monday morning, while Questrade staffs Saturday and Sunday from 10:00 to 16:00 ET. If your problem surfaces on a Saturday, you wait.

The honest framing is that Qtrade optimises for resolution quality rather than availability. If you want an answer at 23:00 on a Sunday, this is the wrong broker. If you want a knowledgeable human who will actually fix a stuck RRSP transfer on the first call, it is the best of the three by a clear margin — and that is a trade many investors should take.

Frequently asked questions

Yes, and it goes further than its competitors. Equities and ETFs trade at CAD 0 online, with no minimum order size and no active-trader qualification. Mutual funds are also CAD 0 to trade, but carry a CAD 1,000 or prospectus minimum purchase and a 1% fee (minimum CAD 45) if sold or switched within 90 days. Options cost CAD 0 base plus CAD 0.75 per contract. Fixed income and exchange-traded debentures cost CAD 1 per CAD 1,000 of face value with a CAD 24.99 minimum and CAD 250 cap. The old quarterly administration fee has also been removed. Free mutual fund trading is the piece nobody else matches: Questrade charges CAD 9.95 and Wealthsimple does not offer mutual funds at all.
