Best brokers in Australia

Australia regulates tightly through ASIC but has no European-style compensation scheme. Protection here rests on segregated client money, capital requirements and the AFCA complaints body. Since 2 April 2024 the Compensation Scheme of Last Resort adds a further layer: it pays up to AUD 150,000 per claim where an AFCA determination — for example against an insolvent securities dealer — goes unpaid. For long-term investors the twelve-month CGT discount is the biggest tax lever.

The ranking

Risk warning: CFDs and leveraged products are complex instruments and come with a high risk of losing money rapidly. Investments can fall in value. Past performance is not an indicator of future results.

The part that decides

Tax notes

Capital gains are taxable, with a 50% discount for individuals holding longer than twelve months. Franking credits on Australian dividends can be offset against tax.

Brokers that withhold tax locally

Our dataset records no provider as a tax withholding agent for this country. How you declare the income is governed by the country's tax law.

Orientation based on the general legal position — not tax advice. Your personal situation and the legislation in force at the time govern.
