What does a year of trading really cost at each broker?

For identical trading behaviour, the gap between the cheapest and the most expensive broker routinely runs into three figures — every year. Enter how you actually trade and the calculator ranks 42 brokers by annual cost, split into commission, currency conversion, custody and inactivity.

Your trading profile

Every field is an annual figure. Results update as you type — there is nothing to submit.

Buys and sells combined.

Typical size of a single order.

30 %

Share of orders the broker has to convert for.

The base for percentage custody fees.

Adds the inactivity fee where the broker charges one.

Assumptions

  • The commission used is the broker's domestic stock order fee. Options, futures, CFDs and funds are priced differently.
  • Brokers with a tiered price list are left out of the ranking: their bands cannot be reduced to a single order fee.
  • For per-share pricing we assume a share price of 100 units to derive the share count.
  • Fees quoted in another currency are converted to euro at static reference rates so they are comparable. These are not live rates.
  • Not included: spreads, exchange fees, third-party cost surcharges, taxes, deposit and withdrawal fees, and individually negotiated terms.
  • Multi-year savings are the plain sum of the annual difference — the money saved is not reinvested.

42 brokers are missing from the ranking. At least one of the figures this calculation needs is not recorded for them: a comparable stock commission, the currency conversion markup, the custody fee or, for a dormant account, the inactivity fee. Leaving them out beats assuming a zero, which would make them look artificially cheap.

10 of them lack only the currency conversion markup, because they publish none — for example because they trade US shares in euro and the conversion sits inside the price. Set “Orders in a foreign currency” to 0% to include them; the ranking then covers orders with no foreign currency at all.

Not in the ranking while no country of residence is chosen, because according to our data their share trading is offered only in some countries: Kraken (for US customers only) and Coinbase (not for retail clients in the EEA).

Advertising disclosure: where a partnership is active, we may earn a commission through broker links. The provider’s terms apply. Commissions do not influence our ratings; paid placements are separately labelled as sponsored.

How this is calculated

The ranking is built from four line items every broker has to disclose. Each is shown separately so you can see where the difference comes from — for frequent traders commission dominates, for buy-and-hold portfolios holding US shares it is almost always the FX markup.

Formula

Annual cost = commission × orders + order value × FX share × orders × conversion markup + portfolio value × custody rate + inactivity fee

Minimum and maximum charges are applied before multiplying by the number of orders — exactly how a broker bills it. This is the same logic the broker directory uses when you sort by cost. Brokers with no comparable published stock commission are left out of the ranking rather than estimated.

The result is an estimate built from publicly documented pricing schedules and your inputs. Schedules change; verify critical numbers with the broker before opening an account.
