Best brokers in New Zealand

For New Zealand investors the foreign investment fund rules are the central issue: overseas holdings costing more than NZD 50,000 are taxed under the fair dividend rate method on 5% of their market value at the start of the year, whether or not anything was actually distributed. Individuals may instead use the comparative value method where it produces a lower result — in a losing year that brings taxable income down to zero, though the loss itself cannot be claimed.

The ranking

Risk warning: CFDs and leveraged products are complex instruments and come with a high risk of losing money rapidly. Investments can fall in value. Past performance is not an indicator of future results.

The part that decides

Tax notes

New Zealand has no general capital gains tax. Gains on share sales are nonetheless taxable where the shares were held on revenue account — bought with the purpose of resale or as part of a dealing business. Overseas holdings costing more than NZD 50,000 at any time in the year fall under the FIF rules (2026/27 tax year); ASX-listed Australian shares are exempt where the conditions are met. An increase of the threshold to NZD 100,000 was proposed in Budget 2026 but is not yet law.

Brokers that withhold tax locally

Our dataset records no provider as a tax withholding agent for this country. How you declare the income is governed by the country's tax law.

Orientation based on the general legal position — not tax advice. Your personal situation and the legislation in force at the time govern.
