Best ETF brokers and savings plans 2026

For long-term ETF investing the single commission matters less than the cost ratio compounded over decades. A 1.5% savings plan fee on EUR 300 a month is EUR 4.50 per execution — roughly EUR 4,500 less final wealth over 30 years at 6% compounded monthly. So the heaviest weight goes on fees — commissions, FX markups, custody and inactivity fees — followed by safety and product range. Savings plan costs and the number of free savings plans are not yet a criterion of their own in the score: compare those terms directly with the provider and check whether promotional conditions are time-limited.

Shows only brokers that accept clients from the selected country.

Risk warning: CFDs and other leveraged products are complex instruments and come with a high risk of losing money rapidly due to leverage. You should consider whether you understand how these products work and whether you can afford to take the high risk of losing your money.

Fidelity Investments

The research-and-education benchmark for US investors, with the cheapest funds in the industry attached.

Ahead on Fees (4.7) and Safety & regulation (4.7) — together those two carry 58% of this category's weighting.

  • USD 0 online US stock and ETF commissions, and Fidelity does not accept payment for order flow on equity orders
  • Zero-expense-ratio index mutual funds (the FZROX family) — no other major US broker matches this on fund cost
  • Options exercise and assignment cost USD 0, and buy-to-close orders at USD 0.65 or less are free

  • Full Danish banking licence (Finanstilsynet licence 1149) and SIFI designation — a stronger structural safeguard than a broker-only permission
  • US stocks and ETFs at 0.08% with a USD 1 minimum on the entry-level Classic tier, and 0.05%/0.03% at higher tiers

  • Pros: xStation 5 is one of the strongest platforms in the commission-free bracket - a real screener, market heat map, sentiment data, economic calendar and news in one workspace, on web, desktop and mobile with near-identical features.
  • Cons: The 0.5% currency conversion charge (0.8% at weekends and on public holidays) applies whenever the instrument currency differs from your account currency. For a EUR investor buying US stocks it is charged on the way in and again on the way out, and it dwarfs the commission it replaces.

  • Pros: CAD 0 commission on every Canadian and US stock and ETF trade, on both the buy and the sell side, with no ECN fees at all on Canadian orders
  • Cons: The 1.5% CAD/USD conversion charge is high and unavoidable unless you deliberately manage currency; on a CAD 20,000 US-stock purchase it costs CAD 300, dwarfing any commission saving

  • Pros: One of the lowest all-in costs among mainstream European brokers for buy-and-hold investors: no commission, no custody fee, no inactivity fee, free withdrawals with no minimum, and a 0.15% FX conversion fee.
  • Cons: Research is the weakest of any broker at this size. There is no meaningful screener, no analyst consensus, no fundamental data worth the name and no export tooling - you will make every decision using data from somewhere else.

  • Pros: CAD 0 commission on Canadian and US stocks and ETFs, plus USD 0 per equity and ETF options contract on every tier, including free assignment
  • Cons: The 1.5% CAD/USD conversion is the same as Questrade's. A USD account (CAD 10 a month on Core, free on Premium from CAD 100,000) removes it on the US trades themselves but not on the CAD you convert into it, which still costs 1.5% per transaction under CAD 10,000 and falls to 0% only from CAD 100,000; journalling at CAD 9.95 is the other way round it

  • Cons: 0.00% p.a. credit interest on cash balances. Competitors pay 1%–1.75% on the settlement or call account, so an investor holding EUR 20,000 in cash gives up EUR 200–350 a year that never shows up in any fee table

The formula

The category score is 70% the category-specific weighting and 30% the general overall score. A strong all-rounder therefore does not drop out simply because it fails to lead one single criterion.

Requirements to be listed

A broker that misses these never appears in this list, no matter how it scores.

  • The broker has to actually offer ETFs — not merely advertise it.
  • Brokers with a documented ETF or share savings plan in the chosen market (without one: in any market) come first, then the rest, each by category score. A fund-only or crypto-only plan, a documented no and an undocumented plan do not count.
