Strengths and weaknesses side by side

Editorial assessment based on the recorded data.

Yuh

One of Switzerland's best-executed banking-and-investing apps — as long as your orders stay small and your ambitions stay simple.

3.5

Pros

  • Free Swiss IBAN, free account management, free custody and a free physical and virtual Debit Mastercard — the recurring cost of holding the account is genuinely zero
  • Recurring 'buy' orders on eligible ETFs carry no trading fee at all, which makes a monthly ETF savings plan effectively commission-free apart from stamp duty and TER
  • Fractional trading from CHF 10 on any available product, so an expensive share like Lindt or an S&P 500 tracker is reachable on a small budget
  • Banking services are provided by Swissquote Bank Ltd under a FINMA licence, with esisuisse cover up to CHF 100,000 and the Swissquote group listed on the SIX Swiss Exchange under SQN
  • Real digital assets rather than CFDs — coins listed on Swissquote's SQX exchange with Coinbase and Bitstamp for liquidity, at 1% per trade with free custody and 24/7 access
  • Multi-currency account in 13 currencies with free CHF and Liechtenstein transfers and free SEPA transfers in euros
  • Pillar 3a wrapper at 0.50% per year all-in including fund TER, FX, administration and unlimited strategy changes, which is competitive for a Swiss 3a solution
  • Account opening is fully in-app and takes minutes, with free phone, message and chat support afterwards

Cons

  • The 0.95% currency exchange markup is the dominant hidden cost: a CHF 5,000 purchase of a US share costs about CHF 47.50 in FX versus CHF 25 in commission, and you pay it again when you sell
  • Percentage-only commission scales badly — CHF 50 on a CHF 10,000 order and CHF 70 on a CHF 20,000 order, with no cap, against tiered Swiss brokers charging a fraction of that at the same size
  • App-only: there is no web platform, no desktop client, no API and no way to review or manage a portfolio from a computer
  • Product range stops at shares, ETFs, Themes, bonds and digital assets — no options, no futures, no forex, no CFDs, no margin and no mutual funds
  • Research is close to non-existent: no screener, no fundamentals suite, no analyst estimates; the marketing site outsources charts to embedded TradingView widgets
  • Cash in saving projects earns 0% in CHF, EUR and USD as published, and transfers outside the SEPA area are not supported at all

Trading 212

One of the cheapest mainstream ways to buy stocks and ETFs in Europe - 0% commission, 0.15% FX, and almost nothing else to pay.

4.1

Pros

  • One of the lowest all-in costs among mainstream European brokers for buy-and-hold investors: no commission, no custody fee, no inactivity fee, free withdrawals with no minimum, and a 0.15% FX conversion fee.
  • Over 13,000 global stocks and ETFs across LSE, Xetra, Gettex, NYSE, Nasdaq and Euronext Amsterdam, all available fractionally from as little as EUR 1.
  • Pies and AutoInvest let you define a target portfolio with weights and drip contributions into it automatically - proper portfolio automation rather than a recurring single-stock order.
  • A true multi-currency account across twelve-plus currencies including GBP, EUR, USD, CHF, PLN, SEK, NOK, DKK, CZK, HUF, CAD and AUD, so you can hold the currency you trade in and avoid conversion entirely.
  • Bank transfers and all withdrawals are free with no limits; card and e-wallet deposits are free up to a cumulative GBP/EUR 2,000 before a 0.7% charge applies.
  • EEA clients of Trading 212 Markets Ltd. get EUR 20,000 ICF cover plus, per Trading 212's own disclosure, additional insurance up to EUR 1m through Lloyd's of London.
  • Regulated across five jurisdictions - FCA 609146, CySEC 398/21, BaFin 10109603, ASIC 541122 and Bulgaria's FSC - which is unusually broad for a private app broker.
  • The mobile app is genuinely excellent: full account functionality, fast, and consistently among the highest-rated broker apps in the UK.

Cons

  • Research is the weakest of any broker at this size. There is no meaningful screener, no analyst consensus, no fundamental data worth the name and no export tooling - you will make every decision using data from somewhere else.
  • No options, no futures, no individual bonds and no mutual funds. The entire proposition is stocks, ETFs, CFDs and spot crypto; anything more structured has to live at another broker.
  • Support is chat and email only, with no retail phone line. For a platform holding a pension and an ISA, the absence of a voice channel is a real gap when something is time-critical.
  • Privately held, so there is no quarterly reporting or public market scrutiny of the kind eToro and XTB are subject to as listed companies.
  • Governance record has two visible blemishes: blocking retail GameStop purchases in January 2021, which drew UK Financial Ombudsman complaints, and being reported in 2026 to have let UK retail clients buy crypto ETNs between October 2025 and January 2026 before holding the FCA permission.
  • CFD costs are much less attractive than the investing side - the FX fee is around 0.5% rather than 0.15%, and overnight interest accrues daily on every leveraged position and compounds over time.
