Our verdict

Our verdict3.6

For an investor living in the Czech Republic or Slovakia, Fio banka is an obvious domestic candidate, and the reasons are structural rather than promotional; Fio itself claims to be the largest online broker in the Czech Republic and Slovakia. It is a licensed bank rather than an app broker, it puts Prague-listed shares, the RM-SYSTÉM retail exchange, US exchanges and XETRA in one account next to a current account, and it runs the Czech DIP retirement account with no portfolio-based fees. The XETRA ladder (EUR 3.95 up to EUR 1,400, EUR 1.98 up to EUR 500 on a DIP) is competitive, safekeeping of listed holdings is free and there is no minimum deposit. On the other side, a US order costs a flat USD 7.95, or USD 9.95 above 100 shares, which is a lot for small purchases. Currency is the bigger cost and the bigger unknown: Fio converts at its own rates, shown only inside e-Broker, the bank's FX rate sheet sat roughly 3% either side of the reference rate on 2 November 2026, and better rates apply only above USD 10,000 between 09:00 and 16:30. Dividends credited from instruments in Fio's own register cost 0.20% plus VAT. We found no options, fractional-share or crypto offer, and under the price list fractions from corporate actions are paid out in cash; the app's store ratings are middling, and support runs in Czech and Slovak. Fio is not listed and its supervisor sits in our tier 2, so the safety case rests on the banking licence, two statutory schemes and audited annual accounts rather than on stock-market scrutiny. For residents of other countries we found no route in.

Best for

  • Czech and Slovak residents
  • DIP retirement savers
  • XETRA ETF investors
  • Prague Stock Exchange investors
  • Investors who want a branch

Less suitable for

  • Residents of other countries
  • Small, frequent US share purchases
  • Options and futures traders
  • Investors who want fractional shares
  • Crypto investors

Pros & cons

Pros

8
  • XETRA orders cost EUR 3.95 up to an order value of EUR 1,400 (EUR 1.98 up to EUR 500 on a DIP account), with German trading from 08:00 to 22:00
  • One account for the Prague Stock Exchange, RM-SYSTÉM, NYSE, NASDAQ and XETRA, plus bonds, certificates, warrants and Fio's own funds
  • Offers the Czech DIP: up to CZK 48,000 a year deductible, no fees for opening or running it and no portfolio-based fees
  • Fio banka, a.s. is a Czech bank and securities dealer licensed by the ČNB according to its legal notice; cash falls under deposit insurance up to EUR 100,000 and securities under the Garanční fond (90% up to EUR 20,000)
  • No minimum deposit and no safekeeping fee on listed shares and ETFs held through Fio's omnibus accounts
  • Free 30-day e-Broker demo and free Škola investování seminars (89 seminars in 19 cities in 2025)
  • Branches across the Czech Republic and Slovakia, and a phone dealing desk until 22:00 on weekdays
  • Loans for trading in CZK, EUR and USD and short selling on the Prague Stock Exchange

Cons

6
  • US orders cost a flat USD 7.95, or USD 9.95 above 100 shares — expensive for small US purchases
  • Currency conversion runs at Fio's own rates, shown only in e-Broker; the bank's FX rate sheet sat roughly 3% either side of the reference rate on 2 November 2026, with better rates only above USD 10,000 between 09:00 and 16:30
  • Dividends and other cash payments credited from instruments in Fio's own register cost 0.20% plus VAT
  • We found no options, fractional shares or crypto, and futures trading has ended per Fio's Slovak price list; short selling in the US is suspended
  • Serves the Czech Republic and Slovakia only as far as we could find, with support in Czech and Slovak
  • Fio Smartbroker rates 3.7 on the Czech App Store and 3.5 on Google Play (2 November 2026), and Fio funds cannot yet be bought in the app

Orders given by phone or at a branch add CZK 100. German shares on XETRA cost EUR 3.95 up to EUR 1,400, EUR 4.95 up to EUR 3,000 and 0.15% (minimum EUR 6.95) above. Price list announced 29 May 2026 and effective 1 July 2026; annex effective 17 August 2026 (21 September 2026 for existing contracts); both read 2 November 2026. Slovak clients of the Bratislava branch have their own price list (Cenník základných služieb, effective 19 February 2026; 2 March 2026 for existing contracts). Its commissions for Prague, the US and XETRA are the same, but the RM-SYSTÉM EasyClick cap is CZK 3,400.

OTC BB and Pink Sheet trades add USD 10; orders by phone or at a branch add USD 2; voluntary corporate actions cost up to USD 15. Sales carry the SEC fee of 0.00206% of the trade value; according to the annex, the FINRA trading activity fee has been USD 0 since 21 July 2025. XETRA: EUR 3.95 up to EUR 1,400, EUR 4.95 from EUR 1,400.01 to EUR 3,000, 0.15% with a EUR 6.95 minimum above EUR 3,000; on a DIP account a XETRA trade up to EUR 500 costs EUR 1.98. Orders routed to the Frankfurt floor add EUR 10, phone or branch orders EUR 2. US-listed ETFs cost USD 7.95 up to 100 shares and USD 9.95 above. Fio's Germany page names over 3,000 ETF and ETP instruments on XETRA.
Options (per contract)Not offerede-Broker lists shares, ETFs, bonds and other securities as tradeable, Fio's derivatives page lists investment certificates and warrants, and the price list effective 1 July 2026 has no options fees; we found no listed options offer.
Futures (per contract)Not offeredFio's Slovak price list (effective 19 February 2026) states that its futures section was removed because the futures trading service has ended, and the Czech price list effective 1 July 2026 has no futures fees. The e-Broker page still lists CME Group, and the fio.sk company page and the old Warsaw/Budapest notices still mention futures; we read these as outdated.

Full review: Fio banka

This review is based on official pricing schedules, legal documents and other available sources. It does not claim that we opened an account with this broker or tested it in practice.

Fees: four markets, four tariffs

Fio prices each market separately, and the price list that took effect on 1 July 2026 is the document to read. Orders placed electronically in e-Broker or Smartbroker cost nothing to submit or cancel; you pay only when a trade executes. Orders given by phone or at a branch carry a surcharge (CZK 100 in Prague, USD 2 in the US, EUR 2 on XETRA).

XETRA, EUR 1,400.01–3,000EUR 4.95——
XETRA, above EUR 3,0000.15%EUR 6.95—

The table shows the Czech price list. Slovak clients of the Bratislava branch have their own price list (effective 19 February 2026) with the same Prague, US and XETRA commissions, but its RM-SYSTÉM EasyClick cap is CZK 3,400.

The 0.35% rate in Prague and at RM-SYSTÉM is labelled a promotional rate in force since 30 November 2012 with no end date; the standard rate is 0.40%. Third-party fees from the annex to the price list come on top: the Prague exchange charges 0.04% (minimum CZK 10, maximum CZK 4,000) on most trades, RM-SYSTÉM lists 0.01% capped at CZK 100, and US sales carry the SEC fee of 0.00206%. US trades on the OTC BB and Pink Sheet markets add USD 10, and XETRA orders routed to the Frankfurt floor add EUR 10.

The DIP account gets the one special price: a XETRA trade up to EUR 500 costs EUR 1.98, which makes a monthly ETF purchase of a few hundred euros affordable. Otherwise DIP orders follow the normal price list.

Beyond commission there is no minimum deposit, no fee on portfolio value, and safekeeping of listed instruments held through Fio's omnibus accounts in Prague, the US and on XETRA is free. We found no inactivity fee in the price list. The costs that do bite are currency conversion and the fee on dividends credited from instruments in Fio's own register, covered in the next section.

Currency conversion, dividends and the small print

For a Czech investor buying US or German shares, the commission is often not the largest cost. Fio converts currency at its own rates: a conversion can be placed in e-Broker, or an order can name the account currency so that Fio converts exactly the settlement amount on settlement day. Fio publishes no conversion margin as a percentage, and its conversion page says conversions always run at the rates shown in e-Broker, which we could not see without an account. The bank's FX rate sheet on the same page, read at 16:34 on 2 November 2026, bought EUR about 3.0% below the ECB reference rate and sold it about 2.9% above; for USD the buying and selling rates were about 2.9% below and 3.0% above the ČNB rate. Conversions above USD 10,000 (or the equivalent) placed between 09:00 and 16:30 get rates Fio calls significantly better, without publishing them. If e-Broker used a spread of that size, a USD 2,000 purchase paid from a CZK balance would cost around USD 60 in conversion, far more than the USD 7.95 commission. Investors who already hold USD or EUR can keep those balances on the trading account, which Fio runs in CZK, EUR, USD, GBP, PLN and HUF, and avoid a conversion per trade; Fio also offers a currency loan to limit exchange-rate risk.

Dividends and other cash payments credited from instruments held in Fio's own register cost 0.20% of the amount plus VAT; coupons of Fio banka's own bonds are credited free. A confirmation of foreign dividend tax for a Czech tax return costs CZK 360 per issue, and arranging a withholding-tax refund costs CZK 1,500 per issue plus central depository fees.

Smaller items: real-time quotes are free for non-professional users who trade on that market in the month; otherwise a feed that was ordered and viewed costs EUR 5 (Prague, streamed in Smartbroker), USD 6 (US) or EUR 8 (XETRA) a month. Moving US or XETRA holdings to another broker costs USD 25 or EUR 25 per ISIN. Unlisted instruments on the omnibus account at the Czech central depository, which includes shares admitted only to RM-SYSTÉM, cost 0.04% a year of nominal value plus VAT. A statement by post costs CZK 60; electronic statements are free.

Safety: a Czech bank without a stock-market listing

Fio banka, a.s. (company ID 61858374, Na Florenci 2139/2, Prague 1) describes itself in its legal notice as a bank and securities dealer with a valid licence from the Czech National Bank (ČNB). The group started in 1993 as a securities firm; Fio, burzovní společnost received its banking licence on 5 May 2010 and became Fio banka. Slovak clients are served by Fio banka, a.s., pobočka zahraničnej banky in Bratislava, a branch of the same bank that names the ČNB and, in part, Národná banka Slovenska as supervisors. The ČNB's online register asks for a captcha code before a search, so we did not read the register entry itself. The audited 2025 annual report does cite the ČNB decision of 5 May 2010 (ref. 2010/4201/570) granting the banking licence, and the ČNB's own list of bank codes names Fio banka, a.s. under code 2010.

Two statutory schemes apply, and the distinction matters:

  • Cash on accounts in your name is covered by Czech deposit insurance at 100% of the balance up to the equivalent of EUR 100,000, as Fio's rate sheet states.
  • Securities fall under the Garanční fond obchodníků s cennými papíry, which pays 90% of the client assets a failed dealer cannot return, at most the equivalent of EUR 20,000. Securities sit in your name or on omnibus accounts kept separately from Fio's own holdings, so the fund is a backstop rather than the main protection.

Money invested inside a DIP is not a bank deposit and is not covered by deposit insurance, as Fio itself points out on its DIP page.

Fio is not listed. It is owned by two Czech individuals, so there are no quarterly market disclosures to follow, but the bank publishes annual reports, and PricewaterhouseCoopers Audit audited the 2025 accounts. The 2025 report gives 1.6 million clients, CZK 315 billion of deposits, total assets of CZK 345 billion and a net profit of CZK 6.5 billion. The ČNB sits in our tier 2, alongside the Polish KNF and Spain's CNMV, one tier below supervisors such as BaFin, the AFM or the FCA. No protection scheme removes the risk of losing money on investments.

Platforms: e-Broker, Smartbroker and a demo

Fio's main trading tool is e-Broker, a browser application that is free to use. It trades the Czech, US and German markets in real time and covers shares, ETFs, bonds and other securities, including the certificates and warrants on Fio's derivatives page. Fio lists intelligent order types by market: stop-loss, trailing stop, trailing limit, stepper, iceberg and bracket orders in Prague; bracket, fill-or-kill, immediate-or-cancel and stop-loss orders on XETRA; and market, limit, stop-loss market and limit, market-on-open and -close, limit-on-open and -close, all-or-nothing, fill-or-kill and bracket orders in the US. Alerts arrive by e-mail free of charge or by SMS at CZK 2.40 per message (EUR 0.10 for Slovak clients), and orders are authorised with SMS codes. The application also carries news, analyses, technical and fundamental analysis and a virtual portfolio. Fio says e-Broker has won Czech Zlatá koruna awards, including first place in Zlatá koruna 2022; it is functional and information-dense, but it is a classic web application rather than a modern trading terminal.

Fio Smartbroker is the mobile app, relaunched in a new version at the end of 2025 according to the annual report. It covers the Czech, German and US markets, manages all investment accounts including the DIP, offers limit, market and stop-loss orders plus US extended hours, and uses fingerprint or face recognition for login and order authorisation. Fio funds cannot yet be bought in the app; Fio says this will follow in a later version. Store ratings were middling on 2 November 2026: 3.7 from 42 ratings on the Czech App Store and 3.5 from 102 on Google Play.

A free demo of e-Broker runs for 30 days after a short registration. It works with fictitious deposits of securities into a virtual portfolio rather than with a simulated cash balance, so it is better for learning the application than for rehearsing a strategy. Fio funds can also be bought in Internetbanking and Smartbanking, the bank's own apps. We found no public trading API.

Markets and products

Fio's range is built around exchange-traded securities on four venues rather than around derivatives.

  • Czech shares and bonds on the Prague Stock Exchange, of which Fio is a member and a shareholder, and on RM-SYSTÉM, the retail-oriented Czech exchange that Fio banka owns
  • US shares and ETFs on NYSE and NASDAQ, plus the OTC BB and Pink Sheet markets; Fio names Pershing LLC as its partner for US trading
  • German shares and ETFs on XETRA, where Fio is a direct member using direct market access; its Germany page names over 1,000 shares and 3,000 ETF and ETP instruments, tradable from 08:00 to 22:00
  • Bonds, including Fio banka's own bonds on RM-SYSTÉM, which trade without Fio's fee
  • Investment certificates and warrants, the derivatives Fio lists today
  • Fio funds from Fio investiční společnost, a subsidiary of the bank: a global equity fund, a Czech equity fund and a real-estate sub-fund
  • Loans for trading and short selling: loans carry a base rate of 8.50% a year in CZK, EUR and USD (rate sheet effective 1 October 2026); short selling works on the Prague Stock Exchange, while short selling in the US is suspended

What is missing: we found no listed options, no crypto, no CFDs or spot forex and no fractional shares. Older Fio pages still mention US futures, but the current price list has no futures fees and the derivatives page lists only certificates and warrants, and Fio's Slovak price list states that the futures service has ended. Trading in Warsaw ended on 1 December 2017 and in Budapest on 1 November 2020.

The annual report shows where clients actually trade: Fio brokered CZK 238 billion of client trades in 2025, 20% more than a year earlier, with the largest share going to US markets, closely followed by the domestic ones, and interest in XETRA up by more than 60%. For a Czech investor the practical benefit is consolidation: Prague dividend shares, US technology names, XETRA ETFs, a DIP and the current account under one bank login.

DIP, Czech tax and who can open an account

Fio offers the dlouhodobý investiční produkt (DIP), the Czech tax-supported long-term investment account, and it is one of the strongest local arguments for the bank. Own contributions are deductible from the tax base up to CZK 48,000 a year, which Fio puts at a tax saving of up to CZK 7,200 for Czech tax residents; employers can contribute too, and Fio cites a tax deduction for employers on contributions of up to CZK 50,000. To keep the tax relief, the money must stay in for 10 years and until the calendar year you turn 60; an earlier withdrawal means repaying the relief, per Fio's FAQ. Trading inside the DIP is unrestricted. Fio charges nothing for opening or running the account and no portfolio-based fees; trades follow the normal price list except for the EUR 1.98 XETRA tariff. Contributions can be paid in CZK, EUR or USD (employer contributions in CZK only), the DIP cash earns no interest, and a DIP can be transferred in from another provider. Fio's FAQ limits the DIP to clients over 18 who are Czech tax residents.

We found no tax-agent service for capital gains: Fio's FAQ describes clients declaring foreign dividends in their own tax return. Fio provides a DIP contribution certificate in its apps each January and, on request, a confirmation of foreign dividend tax for CZK 360 per issue.

Opening an account. Existing Fio clients add a trading account in Internetbanking or Smartbanking. New clients first open a free current account online, with Bank iD for express onboarding, or at a branch with an ID card or passport; citizens of countries outside the EU bring a passport and a second identity document. An investment questionnaire must be completed before the first order. Fio states that the investment framework agreement cannot be concluded by post, and we found no statement that residents of countries other than the Czech Republic and Slovakia are accepted.

Funding. Money reaches the trading account by bank transfer (bank code 2010) or as cash in CZK, USD or EUR at a branch; under the newer framework agreement, Fio current accounts are linked to the trading account automatically. Transfers from the trading account to your own Fio accounts can be made immediately in e-Broker and sent on from there through Internetbanking; direct transfers to another bank go only to accounts registered as permitted accounts, which takes one branch visit. Fio publishes no deposit or withdrawal times.

Research, education and support

Fio describes its analytical service as free and comprehensive: market news from the exchanges, expert articles, analyses, market summary reports, dividend and IPO overviews and a stock list on fio.cz, plus news, analyses and technical and fundamental analysis tools inside e-Broker. Fio's ETF page refers readers to akcie.cz for more on ETF strategies. The service is written for retail investors in the Czech and Slovak market; we found no bought-in research packages such as analyst consensus data of the kind large international brokers sell.

Education is the stronger part. Fio's Škola investování, run together with RM-SYSTÉM, holds free evening seminars of 1.5 to 2 hours for beginners and more experienced investors; the annual report counts 89 seminars in 19 cities in the Czech Republic and Slovakia in 2025. Topics run from the basics of the capital market to foreign exchanges and short-term trading with leverage. The 30-day demo account and guides for beginners round this off.

Support combines a branch network with phone and in-app channels. Fio's pages speak of more than 70 or more than 80 branches in the Czech Republic, depending on the page, plus branches in Slovakia. The infoline (+420 224 346 800) runs Monday to Friday 09:00–17:00; the dealing desk (+420 224 346 493) takes orders from clients with a telephone password Monday to Friday 08:45–22:00, which covers most of the US session. Authorised messages go through Fio servis in the apps, and there is a contact form and the address fio@fio.cz. Support is in Czech, and in Slovak through fio.sk; both sites have an English version, but we found no statement on English-language support.

A personal broker service (Osobní makléř) offers advice from a portfolio of CZK 6 million for 20% of the annual gain; the client confirms each proposed trade by placing the order, usually by phone, and gets a version of e-Broker that shows the portfolio but takes no electronic orders.

Frequently asked questions

We found no source saying so. Fio banka serves clients from its Prague head office and, through its Bratislava branch, in Slovakia, and its onboarding is built around Czech and Slovak current accounts, Bank iD and branch visits. Citizens of countries outside the EU can sign at a branch with a passport and a second identity document, but that rule is about identification, not residence. The DIP is limited to Czech tax residents. Readers outside the two countries should ask Fio directly before relying on an account.
