Best brokers in Spain

For Spanish investors the foreign-holdings reporting duty is the most important side-consideration in choosing a broker. Holding more than EUR 50,000 with a foreign provider triggers a form 720 filing, repeated only once the balance rises by more than EUR 20,000 above the last return filed. Domestic brokers do withhold 19% on dividends and fund redemptions, but that is no substitute for the annual return: gains on share sales carry no withholding at all.

The part that decides

Tax notes

Investment income is taxed on a scale: 19% up to EUR 6,000, 21% up to EUR 50,000, 23% up to EUR 200,000, 27% up to EUR 300,000 and 30% above (2025 and 2026). Spanish payers withhold 19% on dividends and interest and on gains from redeeming fund units. Switching between investment funds (traspaso) triggers no tax; this does not apply to ETFs. Securities abroad above EUR 50,000 must be reported on form 720 between 1 January and 31 March of the following year, and again only once the value rises by more than EUR 20,000; the same applies to crypto-assets abroad on form 721. Since 2022 the law no longer contains special penalties for form 720; we have not checked which general penalties apply today. Purchases of shares in Spanish companies with a market capitalisation above EUR 1bn attract a 0.2% financial transaction tax, owed by the intermediary even if it is based abroad. The new savings and investment account (Cuenta de Ahorro e Inversión) has been in the law since October 2026 but can be opened only after a ministerial order.

Brokers that withhold tax locally

Our dataset records no provider as a tax withholding agent for this country. How you declare the income is governed by the country's tax law.

Orientation based on the general legal position — not tax advice. Your personal situation and the legislation in force at the time govern.
