Our verdict

Editorial verdict4.0

Use eToro if you want copy trading, fractional shares and a genuinely uncluttered app more than you want the lowest all-in cost or a deep professional toolkit. It is one of the strongest social-trading products in Europe, the Nasdaq listing and the FCA / CySEC / ASIC / MAS / SEC licence stack give it a safety profile most app-first competitors cannot match, and removing the inactivity fee in 2026 closed off its most-criticised charge.

Do not use eToro if your money crosses currencies often. Converting between a European local-currency account and USD for a trade costs 0.75% each way before Club discounts, and eToro's own pages disagree on the size of those discounts - that is the biggest cost risk in the account. Avoid it too if you want exchange-traded options or futures outside the US entity, individual bonds, mutual funds, or a platform with serious order types and algorithmic access. Active traders and anyone building a low-cost buy-and-hold portfolio in a non-USD currency will find cheaper and more transparent homes elsewhere.

Best for

  • Copy trading
  • Crypto plus stocks in one account
  • First-time investors
  • Fractional investing
  • Mobile-first users

Less suitable for

  • Active day traders
  • Multi-currency portfolios
  • Options and futures traders
  • Bond and fund investors

Pros & cons

Pros

7
  • CopyTrader is one of the most mature copy-trading products in Europe: no separate fee on top of normal trading costs, a USD 200 minimum per copied trader, and up to 100 traders copied at once.
  • Nasdaq-listed since May 2025 under ETOR, which forces quarterly audited disclosure that most retail brokers never publish.
  • Licensed by the FCA (583263), CySEC (109/10), ASIC (491139), MAS (CMS101824) and the SEC (8-70212) - a genuinely multi-jurisdictional stack rather than a single offshore licence.
  • 300+ ETFs with zero eToro commission and fractional investing from USD 10, so small monthly contributions are not swallowed by minimum ticket sizes.
  • The inactivity fee was removed in 2026; dormant accounts now cost nothing to hold.
  • 150+ cryptoassets held as real coins on the investing account rather than only as CFDs, with coins transferable out to the eToro Money wallet for a 2% fee.
  • The demo account carries all 11,000+ instruments and every platform feature, which makes it a usable rehearsal rather than a stripped-down toy.

Cons

6
  • Currency conversion costs 0.75% each way between a European local-currency account and USD, before Club discounts whose size eToro's own pages state differently - for a broker whose core product is USD-denominated, that is the one number you most need.
  • Stock orders cost USD 1-2 in most countries. On a EUR 200 monthly savings order that is a 0.5-1.0% drag before any conversion cost, which is expensive against Trading 212 or XTB at zero.
  • Crypto costs 1.00% per position for Bronze, Silver and Gold members - charged on the way in and again on the way out. Only Platinum and above see meaningful discounts.
  • No exchange-traded options or futures outside the US entity, no individual bonds and no mutual funds. The range is wide across asset classes but shallow within them.
  • Withdrawals from a USD account cost USD 5 with a USD 30 minimum; only local-currency accounts (EUR, GBP, DKK) escape the charge.
  • Support is chat and ticket only, with no general retail phone line, and priority routing is tied to Club tier - so the smallest accounts get the slowest service.

  • 2023 · ASIC

ASIC sued eToro Aus Capital Limited in the Federal Court in August 2023 in its first design-and-distribution action, alleging the target market for its CFD product was too broad and the client-qualification screening inadequate. Full review: eToro

This review is based on official pricing schedules, legal documents and other available sources. It does not claim that we opened an account with this broker or tested it in practice.

Fees and what they cost in practice

eToro's pricing has moved away from the blanket 'zero commission' message it built its brand on. Its current fee schedule lists USD 1-2 per stock order depending on country and exchange, with secondary reviews reporting USD 0 for UK and Ireland clients. ETFs remain commission-free everywhere, and eToro charges no management or custody fee.

The charges that actually matter sit elsewhere:

  • Crypto: 1.00% per position for Bronze, Silver and Gold Club members, applied when you open and again when you close. Platinum tiers step down to 0.95%-0.10% by volume, Diamond starts at 0.85%.
  • Currency conversion: 0.75% when a UK or European local-currency account converts to or from USD for a trade, so buying a USD asset and later bringing the proceeds back can incur it twice. That is eToro's conversion-fee page, updated 8 September 2026. It lists Club discounts of 20% for Gold and Silver, 40% for Platinum and Platinum+ and 80% for Diamond; the general fee page still says 50% for Platinum and Platinum+ and a full exemption for Diamond. Because the core investing account has historically been USD-denominated, this is the single largest cost for European clients.
  • Withdrawals: USD 5 from a USD account with a USD 30 minimum; free from a local-currency (EUR, GBP, DKK) account.
  • CFDs: stock and ETF CFDs cost 0.15% per trade, and overnight financing is charged nightly Monday to Friday at 22:00 UK time, tripled over the weekend.

The genuinely good news is the removal of the inactivity fee in 2026. eToro previously charged USD 10 a month after twelve months of dormancy, which punished exactly the buy-and-hold users its ETF range is aimed at. That charge is gone.

Safety and regulation

eToro is one of the better-regulated retail platforms in this bracket, and the structure is worth understanding because which entity you sign with determines what you get.

  • eToro (Europe) Ltd - CySEC licence 109/10, the entity behind most EEA accounts. Investor compensation runs through the Cypriot Investor Compensation Fund up to EUR 20,000.
  • eToro (UK) Ltd - FCA firm reference 583263. FSCS investment cover of GBP 85,000. Note that the FSCS deposit limit rose to GBP 120,000 on 1 December 2025; that higher number applies to cash held with a bank, not to your investments.
  • eToro AUS Capital Limited - ASIC AFSL 491139. eToro Singapore Pte. Ltd - MAS CMS101824. eToro USA Securities Inc. - SEC 8-70212. eToro (ME) Limited - ADGM FSRA 220073.
  • eToro (Seychelles) Ltd - FSAS SD076, a tier-3 offshore licence used for some non-EEA clients. If you are onboarded here you have materially weaker recourse than an EEA or UK client.

Structurally, eToro segregates client funds, applies negative balance protection to retail CFD accounts under ESMA and FCA rules, and has published audited financials since its Nasdaq listing in May 2025 under the ticker ETOR. A public listing is not a guarantee of anything, but it does force a disclosure cadence that privately held app brokers avoid. eToro also notes that client cash held with EEA partner banks may attract local deposit-guarantee cover up to EUR 100,000 - a separate scheme from investor compensation, and one that depends on where the cash actually sits.

Trading platforms

eToro runs a single in-house platform across web and mobile, and the mobile build is the better of the two. There is no MetaTrader 4 or 5, no desktop terminal and no general retail trading API, which rules out expert advisors and most algorithmic strategies.

What the platform does well is make a complex product legible. The social feed, CopyTrader and Smart Portfolios sit on the main navigation rather than behind a submenu, and the order ticket shows position size in currency rather than lots, which is a small thing that removes a large amount of beginner confusion. Fractional orders from USD 10 work the same way on any listed stock or ETF.

What it does badly is depth. Order types are limited to market, limit and stop with take-profit and stop-loss attached; there is no trailing stop on every instrument, no conditional or bracket ordering worth the name, and no depth-of-market view. Charting is adequate for trend-following and useless for anything requiring custom indicators - ProCharts adds multi-chart comparison but not a scripting layer.

CopyTrader is the reason most people are here. You pick a trader, commit at least USD 200, and every position they open is replicated proportionally in your account. You can copy up to 100 traders simultaneously, there is no separate copy fee, and you can stop copying at any time. Past-performance statistics on each trader are visible and prominently risk-scored, which is more disclosure than most social platforms manage - but a copied strategy is still a leveraged discretionary strategy run by someone with no duty to you.

Markets and products

eToro advertises 11,000+ instruments, and the breadth is real across asset classes even where the depth inside each one is not.

  • Stocks: thousands of listings across US, UK and European exchanges, all available fractionally from USD 10.
  • ETFs: 300+, including Vanguard, iShares and SPDR ranges, commission-free.
  • Crypto: 150+ cryptoassets, tradable as real coins on the investing account and as CFDs on the leveraged account. Coins can be transferred out to the eToro Money wallet for a 2% fee.
  • CFDs: forex, indices, commodities and single stocks under ESMA leverage caps.
  • Smart Portfolios: thematic managed baskets (clean energy, semiconductors, and similar) with no eToro management fee.

The gaps are specific and worth checking against your own plan. There are no exchange-traded options or futures for EEA clients - eToro offers both only through its US entity, at USD 0.75 per futures contract plus exchange fees. There are no individual bonds and no mutual funds. If your portfolio plan involves a gilt ladder, a corporate bond allocation or a fund platform, eToro cannot hold it.

The combination that eToro genuinely owns is stocks, ETFs and crypto in a single regulated account with copy trading over the top. Nobody else in Europe does all four properly in one login.

Account opening and funding

Onboarding is fully digital and fast. Most applicants are verified the same day; where manual document review is triggered it stretches to about three business days. You will complete a MiFID appropriateness questionnaire covering trading experience and risk tolerance, and answering it honestly can restrict access to leveraged products - which is the system working as intended.

The minimum first deposit is USD 50 in most countries, though it varies by country and funding method, and the minimum fractional trade is USD 10. Funding methods cover bank transfer and SEPA, credit and debit cards, PayPal, Skrill, Neteller, Sofort and iDEAL. Cards and e-wallets credit instantly; bank transfers take one to three business days.

The decision that costs or saves you the most money is which base currency you open in. eToro now supports local-currency accounts in EUR, GBP and DKK alongside the traditional USD account. A USD account pays USD 5 per withdrawal with a USD 30 minimum, and converts every deposit and withdrawal; a EUR account withdraws free with no minimum. For a European investor there is no good reason to hold a USD account unless you genuinely think in dollars.

Withdrawals are processed in roughly one business day, then take two to eight days to land depending on the method. eToro does not act as a tax withholding agent in Germany, Austria or Switzerland, so DACH investors handle their own reporting.

Research and education

eToro's research is aimed squarely at retail investors making a first pass at an idea rather than analysts building a thesis. Each instrument page carries an analyst consensus, price-target range, fundamentals snapshot, earnings calendar entry and a news feed, plus something no traditional broker offers: the live sentiment of eToro's own user base on that instrument, and the ability to see which top-performing copied traders hold it.

That crowd data is the differentiator and also the trap. It tells you what is popular, which is not the same as what is sound, and eToro's interface does very little to separate the two. Treat it as a starting point.

The eToro Academy is genuinely one of the better free education libraries in the industry - structured courses rather than a blog archive, covering order types, risk management, portfolio construction, crypto basics and the mechanics of copy trading itself. Webinars run regularly and are archived. The material is promotional in the sense that it assumes you will trade, but the technical content is accurate and not dumbed down.

The demo account deserves specific credit: it carries all 11,000+ instruments and every live platform feature with virtual funds, so you can rehearse a CopyTrader allocation or a leveraged position without money at risk. Many competitors offer a demo that is quietly missing half the product; eToro's is not.

What is missing is screening depth. There is no serious stock screener with custom fundamental filters, no backtesting and no export to a spreadsheet worth the name.

Customer support

Support is the weakest part of the eToro package and has been for years. Contact runs through live chat and a ticket system; there is no general retail phone line. Ticket responses are typically measured in hours rather than minutes, and quality varies noticeably between first-line agents and escalated cases.

Crucially, response priority is tied to your eToro Club tier. Silver, Gold, Platinum, Platinum+ and Diamond members get progressively faster routing, and the top tiers get a named account manager. That is a defensible commercial choice, but it means the accounts least able to absorb a problem - small balances, new users - sit at the back of the queue. If something goes wrong with a withdrawal or a locked account on a EUR 500 balance, expect to wait.

Coverage is broad in language terms: English, German, French, Spanish, Italian, Dutch, Portuguese, Polish, Arabic, Russian and Chinese among others. Coverage tracks market hours rather than running genuinely 24/7 for every language.

The help centre itself is well organised and answers most procedural questions - verification, funding, withdrawal timelines - without needing an agent, which absorbs a lot of the volume. Where users report the sharpest frustration is in account verification disputes and withdrawal holds, where the automated system flags something and the only route through is a ticket queue. Budget for that when deciding how much of your portfolio to hold here.

Frequently asked questions

Not everywhere. eToro's current fee schedule lists USD 1-2 per stock order depending on country and exchange, with secondary reviews reporting USD 0 for clients in the UK and Ireland. ETFs remain commission-free in every market, and there is no management or custody fee. The bigger cost for most European clients is currency conversion rather than the commission itself.
