Best brokers in Hong Kong

Through the northbound links of Stock Connect, Hong Kong offers access to shares listed in Shanghai and Shenzhen; for defaults from 2020 onwards, the Investor Compensation Fund also covers such trades. Alongside commission, stamp duty of 0.1% on each of the buy and the sell is an ongoing cost on Hong Kong shares. Brokers are supervised by the Securities and Futures Commission (SFC); licensed firms carry a CE number.

Investor protection

Investor Compensation Fund — up to HKD 500,000 per person for securities and a separate HKD 500,000 for futures, per holder on joint accounts. It pays when a licensed intermediary or authorised financial institution defaults in relation to exchange-traded products in Hong Kong, and, for defaults from 1 January 2020, also for Shanghai and Shenzhen securities traded through the Stock Connect northbound link.

The part that decides

Tax notes

Hong Kong levies no capital gains tax. Per the tax authority IRD, profits tax applies only to profits from a trade or business carried on in Hong Kong and excludes profits from the sale of capital assets; dealing-like activity can fall under it. Dividends from a company that is itself subject to profits tax are excluded from assessable profits; we have not read a separate IRD statement on dividends received by individuals. Buying and selling Hong Kong stock attracts stamp duty of 0.1% of the consideration on each side (from 17 November 2023), 0.2% for the round trip. There is no tax treaty with the United States, so US dividends bear 30% US withholding tax. Voluntary MPF contributions to a TVC account and qualifying deferred annuity premiums are deductible up to HKD 60,000 a year together.

Brokers that withhold tax locally

Our dataset records no provider as a tax withholding agent for this country. How you declare the income is governed by the country's tax law.

Orientation based on the general legal position — not tax advice. Your personal situation and the legislation in force at the time govern.

A separate limit of HKD 500,000 applies to losses on futures contracts; on a joint account the limit applies to each holder. Per the Investor Compensation Company, the fund pays when a licensed intermediary or authorised financial institution defaults in relation to exchange-traded products in Hong Kong; for defaults from 1 January 2020 also for Shanghai and Shenzhen securities traded through the northbound link of Stock Connect. The SFC recognises the Investor Compensation Company to administer the fund.

Such schemes pay when an institution fails and cannot return securities or cash. They do not cover falling prices.
