Best brokers in Sweden

In Sweden the ISK taxes a deemed return on capital instead of gains. Since 1 January 2026 the first SEK 300,000 of capital base is tax-free, shared between ISK, endowment insurance and PEPP. Above that, the ISK is cheaper in pure arithmetic when the actual return exceeds the 3.55% deemed rate (2026) — leaving deferral and losses aside. In losing years the ISK does not help, because losses are not deductible there; in a conventional depot they can be netted and 70% of the rest deducted.

The part that decides

Tax notes

The investeringssparkonto (ISK) taxes a deemed return on capital rather than realised gains. For 2026 the deemed income is 3.55% of the capital base (the 2.55% government borrowing rate on 30 November 2025 plus one percentage point, at least 1.25%), taxed at 30% — an effective 1.065%. Since 1 January 2026 the first SEK 300,000 of capital base is exempt (SEK 150,000 in 2025); the allowance covers your ISK, endowment insurance and PEPP holdings combined and is applied automatically in your tax return. Interest on cash in an ISK is taxable if its rate exceeds the government borrowing rate of the previous November; moving securities from an ordinary depot into an ISK counts as a sale. A conventional depot is taxed at 30% on investment income, and there losses count — per Skatteverket, for example, losses on listed equity funds against gains on listed shares in the same year — and any remaining loss is deductible at 70%. A capital deficit reduces tax by 30% up to SEK 100,000 and by 21% above that.

Brokers that withhold tax locally

Our dataset records these providers as tax withholding agents for this country. Whether that removes the need to declare the income yourself is something we have not checked for this country. The country's tax law decides.

Orientation based on the general legal position — not tax advice. Your personal situation and the legislation in force at the time govern.

ISK
Instead of gains and dividends, a deemed return is taxed at 30% each year: the government borrowing rate on 30 November of the previous year plus one percentage point, at least 1.25%. For 2026 that is 3.55% (2.55% + 1) of the capital base, an effective 1.065% on the part above the tax-free base amount of SEK 300,000 (2025: SEK 150,000). The base amount covers ISK, endowment insurance and PEPP together and is deducted automatically in the return. Capital base: the values at the start of each quarter plus all deposits in the year, divided by four. Interest on cash in the ISK is taxable if its rate exceeds the November government borrowing rate of the previous year (from 2025). Losses are not deductible; an account has a single owner; moving securities from an ordinary depot into an ISK counts as a sale. Eligible: instruments on a regulated market anywhere in the world, on an MTF only within the EEA, fund units and cash.
Kapitalförsäkring
The insurer pays the yield tax (avkastningsskatt) and charges it to the customer under the contract; holders of a Swedish endowment insurance report nothing for it in their return. The tax-free base amount is deducted from the ISK first. A Swedish resident holding a foreign endowment insurance normally pays the yield tax in Sweden.Source: skatteverket.seAs of 25 October 2026
