Best brokers in Switzerland

The Swiss market splits in two: domestic providers with a FINMA licence, bank status and a Swiss tax statement on one side, materially cheaper EU brokers on the other. The cost gap is large — domestic providers can charge five to ten times more for a Swiss equity order. Against that, assets held at a Swiss bank sit outside the insolvency estate as segregated property, and the tax statement simplifies your filing considerably. Note also the Swiss stamp duty on transactions routed through Swiss institutions.

The ranking

Risk warning: CFDs and leveraged products are complex instruments and come with a high risk of losing money rapidly. Investments can fall in value. Past performance is not an indicator of future results.

The part that decides

Tax notes

Private capital gains are generally tax-free in Switzerland unless you are classified as a professional securities dealer. Dividends and interest are taxed as income; the 35% Swiss withholding tax is reclaimable. Portfolio holdings count towards wealth tax.

Brokers that withhold tax locally

Our dataset records these providers as tax withholding agents for this country. They do not replace your own declaration: securities and their income still belong in the securities schedule (Wertschriftenverzeichnis) of your tax return. Only if you declare the assets and income there properly do you get back the 35% withholding tax on Swiss interest and dividends.

Switzerland

Swiss criteria of the researched providers

CHF account, tax statement, stamp duty and deposit protection — each with its source and date. “Not documented” means it is not stated where we looked; it does not mean “no”.

Swiss points: +1 for a CHF account, +1 for a Swiss tax statement (free or paid), +1 for esisuisse, +1 if the provider charges no stamp duty. Facts that are not documented count 0.

The order is not an overall rating. The overall rating is in the ranking above; this table only shows what is documented for investors resident in Switzerland.
