Best brokers in Germany

Germany runs one of Europe's most competitive broker markets. Neobrokers have pushed commissions to effectively zero, while established direct banks compete on venue breadth and service. The decisive difference for German investors is fiscal: a broker with a German entity withholds capital gains tax automatically and nets losses in the statutory loss pot. With foreign providers you handle all of that yourself, which becomes real work at higher trading volumes.

The ranking

Risk warning: CFDs and leveraged products are complex instruments and come with a high risk of losing money rapidly. Investments can fall in value. Past performance is not an indicator of future results.

Tax notes

Investment income is taxed at a flat 25% withholding rate plus solidarity surcharge (5.5% of the tax, so 26.375% in total) and, where applicable, church tax. The annual allowance is EUR 1,000 (single) or EUR 2,000 (joint), but your bank only applies it at source once you file an exemption order (Freistellungsauftrag) with it; otherwise tax is withheld in full and you reclaim it later in your return. For funds and ETFs the annual Vorabpauschale applies on top: 70% of the base rate (3.20% for 2026) on the value at the start of the year, capped at the fund's actual gain over that year — so it drops to zero in a losing year. In return, the partial exemption leaves 30% of equity-fund income untaxed. German brokers withhold automatically and net losses in the statutory loss pot; with foreign providers you must declare the income yourself on Anlage KAP.

Brokers that withhold tax locally

Our dataset records these providers as tax withholding agents for this country. Where capital gains tax (Kapitalertragsteuer) has been withheld, income tax on that income is generally settled by the deduction (§ 43 Abs. 5 EStG). On application you can still include the income in your tax return.
