Our verdict

Editorial verdict3.9

AvaTrade is a good fit if you are learning, if you trade actively but not obsessively, and if you value predictable costs and a licence stack you can look up in a public register. The fixed-spread model is the honest differentiator: at 0.9 pips on EUR/USD you pay more than a raw-spread account in calm markets, but you know exactly what a trade costs when a central bank surprises everyone. AvaOptions and the three copy-trading integrations widen the product set well beyond a typical retail CFD shop.

It is the wrong broker if you want to own assets rather than derivatives on them, if you are a cost-led scalper counting tenths of a pip, or if you open an account and then leave it alone. Three quiet months triggers USD 50 per quarter and twelve quiet months adds a USD 100 administration fee — an account funded with the USD 100 minimum can be consumed by dormancy charges before you place a second trade. UK residents should also note there is no FCA authorisation here and therefore no FSCS cover.

Pros & cons

Pros

7
  • Nine regulated entities, from Ireland and Cyprus to Japan, South Africa and Kenya, with the EU book run from Ireland under Central Bank of Ireland reference C53877 and Investor Compensation Company cover of 90% of losses up to EUR 20,000.
  • Fixed spreads from 0.9 pips on EUR/USD mean the cost per trade does not blow out during news — a real advantage over variable-spread rivals when liquidity thins.
  • AvaOptions gives retail clients vanilla FX calls and puts with a payoff-diagram strategy builder; almost no other broker of this size exposes real optionality to non-professional clients.
  • Three copy-trading routes — in-house AvaSocial plus DupliTrade and ZuluTrade — rather than a single walled garden of signal providers.
  • USD 100 minimum deposit, no deposit or withdrawal charges from AvaTrade, and account opening in roughly ten minutes with verification typically inside a business day.
  • AvaTradeGO includes AvaProtect, a paid feature that reimburses a losing position inside a chosen window — a legitimately useful training wheel for position sizing.
  • 24/5 support in more than a dozen languages across phone, email and live chat, with consistently fast chat pickup in independent contact testing.

Cons

6
  • Dormancy is punitive: USD 50 charged quarterly after just three consecutive months without a trade, plus a USD 100 annual administration fee after twelve months. Most competitors wait six to twenty-four months.
  • No real shares or ETFs. Equity exposure is CFD-only at roughly 0.13% of notional, which means no ownership, no voting and financing costs on anything held overnight.
  • AvaTrade quotes as a market maker and is the counterparty to your trade — a structural conflict that agency, raw-spread models do not carry.
  • No UK FCA authorisation, so UK clients are onboarded by an EU or offshore entity and fall outside FSCS protection.
  • Fixed spreads are expensive in calm conditions: 0.9 pips on EUR/USD is modestly above the roughly 0.8 pips all-in cost of a good raw-spread-plus-commission account.
  • The demo account expires after 21 days, which is too short to forward-test a swing strategy properly.

Recorded regulatory actions

  • 2019 · Israel Securities Authority₪576,000

The Israel Securities Authority imposed a NIS 576,000 penalty on the group's Israeli entity in January 2019 for missing statutorily required adjustments and controls and for failing to obtain the separate auditor's report the rules demand, in a matter touching the safekeeping of client money.

  • 2014 · Central Bank of Ireland€165,000

The Central Bank of Ireland settled with Ava Capital Markets Limited on 4 March 2014, reprimanding the firm and imposing a EUR 165,000 penalty for MiFID breaches between February 2010 and December 2011: 523,389 executed transactions were reported late or with wrong details, the firm had no adequate policies for meeting its reporting duties, controls over information processing were ineffective, and the outsourcing of reporting to a third party was entered into and managed without due care. Ava Capital Markets Limited is the former name of the same legal person now trading as AVA Trade EU Limited under Central Bank reference C53877. Mitigating: the firm self-reported in January 2012, rebuilt reporting in-house, ended the outsourcing arrangement and cooperated; the Central Bank treated the matter as concluded.

  • 2024 · JFSA / Kanto Local Finance Bureau

The Kanto Local Finance Bureau issued a business improvement order against Ava Trade Japan K.K. on 14 May 2024, on the recommendation of the Securities and Exchange Surveillance Commission. Between May 2021 and August 2022, on the instruction of the representative director, large-client data was deleted before stress tests on at least 37 occasions and the falsified results were reported to the Financial Futures Association, while measures needed to secure solvency were not taken. The regulator treated it as a governance failure reaching the parent company. No fine was imposed - an improvement order under the FIEA is a supervisory measure, not a monetary penalty.

Regulation and investor compensation reduce risk, they do not remove it. No broker is guaranteed safe.

Full review: AvaTrade

This review is based on official pricing schedules, legal documents and other available sources. It does not claim that we opened an account with this broker or tested it in practice.

Fees and what they cost in practice

AvaTrade is a spread-only broker. There is no commission on FX, indices, commodities or crypto — the entire dealing cost sits in the price you are quoted.

  • EUR/USD: from 0.9 pips fixed. On a one-lot round turn that is roughly USD 9.
  • Share CFDs: around 0.13% of the notional value, taken in the spread.
  • Crypto CFDs: from about 0.15% over the underlying market on BTC/USD, wider on smaller tokens.
  • Overnight financing: charged on any position open past 22:00 GMT, in both directions.

The fixed-spread model is the thing to understand. In a quiet European morning a raw-spread account might quote EUR/USD at 0.1 pips plus USD 3.50 per side, an all-in cost near 0.8 pips — a fraction cheaper than AvaTrade. During an ECB press conference that same raw account can widen to three or four pips while AvaTrade holds 0.9. If you trade the news, that is worth paying for. If you trade the lunchtime lull, it is not.

The real damage is dormancy. USD 50 per quarter after three consecutive months without a trade, plus USD 100 a year in administration fees after twelve months is one of the earliest and steepest inactivity regimes in the sector. Trade or withdraw — do not park money here.

Safety and regulation

AvaTrade runs one of the broadest licence stacks in retail CFD trading, and unusually those licences sit with genuinely serious regulators rather than clustering offshore.

  • Central Bank of Ireland — AVA Trade EU Ltd, reference C53877, authorised as a MiFID investment firm since 2009. This is the entity most European clients face.
  • CySEC (Cyprus) — DT Direct Investment Hub Ltd, licence 347/17. The group's second EU licence, and the one that matters if your client agreement names it: cover comes from the Cypriot ICF at EUR 20,000 per investor rather than the Irish 90%-of-loss formula.
  • ASIC (Australia) — Ava Capital Markets Australia Pty Ltd, AFSL 406684.
  • Japan FSA — Ava Trade Japan K.K., registration 1662, with FFAJ membership number 1574.
  • FSCA (South Africa) — FSP 45984.
  • ADGM FSRA (Abu Dhabi) — Ava Trade Middle East Ltd, 190018; the Israel Securities Authority — ATrade Ltd, 514666577; Kenya's CMA — Ava Trade Kenya Limited, 262; and the BVI FSC — Ava Trade Markets Ltd, SIBA/L/13/1049 — cover other regions.

Clients of the Irish entity are covered by the Investor Compensation Company DAC, which pays 90% of a loss up to a maximum of EUR 20,000 per investor if the firm fails. That is materially thinner than the UK FSCS limit, and it is worth knowing that AvaTrade holds no FCA authorisation and does not accept UK residents at all. Client money is held in segregated accounts and retail accounts carry negative balance protection.

One structural point deserves stating plainly: AvaTrade is a market maker with a dealing desk and is the counterparty to your position. That is legal, disclosed and common, but it is a different risk profile from an agency broker passing orders to a liquidity pool. No broker is guaranteed safe; what you can verify here is a long licence trail, an audited group and twenty years of continuous operation.

Trading platforms

There are effectively five platforms, and they serve different people.

AvaTradeGO is the flagship mobile app and the best thing AvaTrade builds. The order ticket is clean, risk parameters are visible before you commit, and AvaProtect — a paid option that refunds a losing position inside a chosen window — is a genuinely novel feature for beginners who have not yet internalised stop placement. It is not free, and the premium is priced into the position, but it is honest about that.

MetaTrader 4 and 5 are offered in full, including expert advisors, custom indicators and the MT5 strategy tester. If you already run MQL systems, nothing is held back. MT5 is the better pick: more timeframes, depth of market and a far more usable backtester.

WebTrader is the browser platform. It works and it is fast enough, but it is clearly the least loved of the set — charting depth and order types trail MT5 noticeably.

AvaOptions is the outlier. It is a desktop and mobile platform for vanilla FX options with a strategy builder that draws the payoff diagram as you construct spreads, straddles and risk reversals. Very few retail CFD brokers expose real optionality to non-professional clients, and for anyone who wants defined-risk FX exposure it changes what the account can do.

AvaSocial handles in-house copy trading, with DupliTrade and ZuluTrade connected for a wider pool of strategy providers.

Markets and products

AvaTrade covers roughly a thousand tradable markets, and the composition matters more than the headline number.

  • Forex: 53 pairs, majors through to exotics.
  • Indices: 36 global index CFDs.
  • Commodities: 19 contracts spanning energy, metals and agriculturals.
  • Crypto: 26 crypto CFDs.
  • FX options: 87 vanilla contracts via AvaOptions.
  • Share and ETF CFDs: several hundred single names and fund proxies.

The critical limitation: you cannot own anything here. Shares and ETFs are available only as contracts for difference. You get price exposure and leverage, you pay financing to hold overnight, and you never appear on a share register. For a swing trader that is a reasonable trade-off. For anyone building a multi-year portfolio it is the wrong instrument entirely — a custody broker that settles real shares is what you want.

There are also no bonds, no mutual funds, no warrants and no exchange-listed futures in the main account. The group launched AvaFutures in 2024 for CME-listed contracts, but that is a separate platform with a separate account and is not part of what a standard AvaTrade client receives.

Account opening and funding

Onboarding is quick and entirely digital. The application takes about ten minutes, and verification — proof of identity plus proof of address — is usually cleared within one business day. The minimum deposit is USD 100 or the equivalent in EUR, GBP, AUD or CHF, which is low enough to be a genuine test drive rather than a commitment.

Base currencies are USD, EUR, GBP, AUD and CHF. Choosing the one that matches your bank account matters: every conversion between your funding currency and your account currency is a cost you do not need to pay.

Funding methods cover bank transfer and SEPA, Visa and Mastercard debit and credit cards, and the main e-wallets including PayPal, Skrill and Neteller. AvaTrade charges no deposit or withdrawal fees of its own, though your card issuer or bank may. Card and e-wallet deposits land instantly; bank transfers take one to five business days.

Withdrawals are processed in one to two business days after approval, but the end-to-end wait for a card refund can stretch to about ten business days once the card network is involved — plan around that rather than being surprised by it. Withdrawals must generally return to the source of the original deposit, which is standard anti-money-laundering practice rather than an AvaTrade quirk.

Research and education

Education is where AvaTrade genuinely outperforms its peer group, and it is clearly deliberate given the beginner-heavy client base.

The learning library runs from what a pip is through to option greeks, structured as short written lessons with accompanying video. There are regular webinars, an economic calendar, and instrument-level explainer pages that are more useful than the usual search-engine filler. The demo account is funded with 100,000 in virtual currency — though it expires after 21 days, which is the one genuinely annoying constraint. Three weeks is enough to learn a platform; it is not enough to forward-test a swing system across a full market cycle.

Research is competent rather than exceptional. You get daily and weekly market commentary, technical analysis on the major pairs and indices, and integrated news. What you do not get is the depth a research-led broker provides: no proprietary equity analysis worth the name, no screener that would help you build a thesis, no analyst price targets. For a CFD-focused, short-horizon client base that is a defensible allocation of effort — but if research drives your decisions, this is not the broker that will feed you.

The copy-trading stack doubles as education of a sort: watching a strategy provider's drawdown in real time teaches risk management faster than any webinar.

Customer support

Support runs 24 hours a day, five days a week, through phone, email and live chat, and it is one of AvaTrade's stronger dimensions. Independent contact testing repeatedly reports live-chat pickup in well under a minute, with answers from people who understand the platform rather than reading from a script.

Coverage spans more than a dozen languages, including German, French, Spanish, Italian, Portuguese, Dutch, Arabic, Russian, Polish, Japanese, Chinese and Turkish, with local phone numbers across dozens of markets. For a DACH client that means German-language support that is actually staffed, not a machine-translated FAQ.

The gaps are structural rather than about competence. There is no weekend cover, which matters if a crypto CFD position moves against you on a Sunday. And because the group operates through several regional entities, the answer to a question about leverage limits, investor protection or instrument availability depends on which entity holds your account — support is good about clarifying this, but you should ask explicitly rather than assume the marketing page applies to you.

Complaints handling follows the process of your regulating entity: for clients of the Irish entity that is the Central Bank of Ireland framework and, ultimately, the Financial Services and Pensions Ombudsman.

Frequently asked questions

Yes. European clients are onboarded by AVA Trade EU Ltd, a MiFID investment firm authorised by the Central Bank of Ireland under reference C53877 since 2009. That entity brings Investor Compensation Company cover of 90% of losses up to EUR 20,000 if the firm fails. This is separate from the UK: AvaTrade holds no FCA authorisation, so UK clients get no FSCS protection.
